(Think of an US president saying "I am allowed to make whatever decision I want," which one are you thinking about? :)).

Fair. I don’t have anything else to say other then that it is not fair to put so much pressure one one man in this position. At the very least he does not have to stay in this position. If a president who many are attempt to get them to run a second term didn’t want to do that saying it was too much pressure, I would not blame them.
It's a lot of hard work and pressure getting to the top in anything. It's even more hard work and pressure staying there. Motivation is about feeling the gain is worth the pain. When motivation ebbs, nobody can conjure it out of thin air. Magnus Carlsen was within his rights in deciding not to defend the title. We might be a little disappointed that he did not defend but we had no right to demand or expect he would defend. Time to move on.

Yes, he's within his right to refuse to defend his title, no argument about that, it is a free world. But I do not agree we have no right in pointing out that this decision is harmful to the title.
Magnus would leave eventually, whether it be when he would 50, 75, or 100. Champions and geniuses alike come and go, but chess lives on.

Clearly, OP wasn't using boomer to refer to the Baby Boom generation. Boomer is also slang for a ballistic missile submarine. Maybe because Magnus tried to blow up the Sinquefield cup?
