Do you play chess because you love it or play it for points because of your ego ???

Do you play chess because you love it or play it for points because of your ego, so someone could admire to your points ??? Question is simple, so try to be honest answering it...
Cause I love it, 'cause if I played it for my ego I wouldn't get very far... >=)
It doesn't make much sense to spend countless hours playing just for someone to "admire your points", because one could just lie and say something like "I'm a GrandMaster and have won two FIDE tournaments.".

IMO everyone (including myself) plays because they find pleasure in such activity itself. And the rating system is just a strength/progress tracking system which increases our motivation.

As a teenager a family member showed me the game of chess, and almost immediately I was fascinated by it. Not just by the chess pieces and chess board and chess games, but also the anecdotes, whether funny or dramatic. I heard the stories about Bobby Fischer beating Larsen and Taimanov with 6-0 and then the match on Iceland, the Bxh2?! move, being behind in the match, while never having won a game against Spassky and then still winning.
The tactics in chess and the beauty of some chess positions does have a big attraction to me. And then, when playing chess, or watching a game, there's the adrenaline and dopamine production.
At the same time chess can be a way to forget about all the problems and conflicts on planet Earth.
And at the very same time chess has a unity effect, bringing people together from all over the world (No matter which religion, gender, background, rich or poor) who share the love for chess. That is also a beautiful thing imho.

Points and ego ? Well, maybe it is there, but that's a side effect :)
I really doubt there are many people who would play chess so someone could admire them or their points. Besides many people consider those very good in chess as weirdoes, e.g. Carlsen had problems at school with classmates, Morphy had serious issues (ok it was a different time then) and one of the worst pick up lines you can tell to a girl you like according to chessbrahs is one of the following "I am a chessplayer" or "I play chess for a living"...nothing to gain unless you are international star of at least Karjakin s playing strength.
Never heard that Carlsen had problems with his classmates.

I agree with Achja, though victory does play a greater part for me than he suggests. If I'm not improving/winning/playing well, I'm not having fun.
yeah, I play only because of the points. When I go to a bar I like to shout as loud I can "look at me, peasants, I GOT 1500 GLICKOS AT LICHESS YOU FOOKIN PLEB!
Tbh I do it for both(don't ask :P)
I love the game, its relaxing.
but sometimes I get confident and play for points.
Many good answers/comments. I say both too.

Love it, yea. It's addicting. I wouldn't say relaxing, when I get done with a game I'm full of adrenaline. (Maybe that's why it's addicting to me.)

I'm definitely playing to win, and I love to see my rating go up, but not for admiration. (I love the shouting in the bar answer.)

Ego, interesting question. Not ego to say ah-ha I'm the best. My ego is not that delusional. I've worked hard to improve my game, (Big thank-you to Lichess for providing such a great platform.) and now I'm confident enough to say: yea, I play chess, if asked.

Loving chess, and wanting to improve your rating go hand-in-hand. One doesn't exclude the other.
