jmaskell has good advice
studying master games in said opening will greatly help you understanding common plans
anotated games or videos from someone like daniel king on YT are even better ofc

@FishandChips3 you followed the theory till the move 13. you played good till this point. But what was the point to play g6? In your case you make your castle weak, allowing white to take adv of it.
The move g6 is played but with some preparation, what you have not done.
Take a look in some masters games and you will understand.
All the best

I've played the Marshall Gambit on ICCF and I'm undefeated. I have not won a game, either, though. When White has avoided the Marshall proper I have a plus score, but in master level correspondence chess the Marshall is 100 % drawing weapon and on ICCF White scores under 50 %. The Marshall is interesting and below master level one can play almost anything: the mistakes happen in the middlegame and in the endgame. The most important thing is to analyze the lost games and correct your play. Changing openings constantly is not the solution.

I play the Sicilian against the Ruy as black. As white I like the closed Ruy, but I find I either crush my opponents or get crushed. I find it is tricky coordinating pieces and gaining control of the right squares, when black seems to have so many options.
For you guys reacting to my 1st post with head scratching emojis, who wonder how I play the Sicilian against the Ruy Lopez, it is a pun. I refuse to play black against the Ruy Lopez, so you will get a Sicilian from me. If you don't understand what I said about the closed Ruy and how it turns out for me, don't feel bad. I don't exactly understand it either. It didn't matter to me that the OP was simply requesting what people play as black when they encounter the Ruy Lopez. I just felt like saying it, probably out of frustration in generally with the opening in general.
