I hope Ivanchuk wins the tournament, that guy really deserves it :-)
Anyways, we've seen some really fantastic chess today.
Ivanchuk plays good but he is old as ( maybe older than lol ) hell
I'm happy to see the big midget and Kramnik exit the tournament; less so for Naka. I like Naka and his objective approach to the evaluation of chess positions.
Yeah, I'm a big fan of Naka as well, one of my favorite players of all times, he simply doesn't meet my unrealistic expectations of crushing everybody all the time. So, I'm always dissapointed.
What "qualities" makes for personalities becoming favorites? Seems people will remain "a fan" through thick and thin. Take Tiger Woods. Once people became fan, I have met very few people who would ever tolerate the slightest adverse comment regarding their idol, seeing only the side they want to see.
Rarely do people "know" their idols. For that matter rarely do they know the ones they dislike.
I used to like Naka. Not anymore, since his comment "I only respect 3 other players besides myself in blitz" when asked about players past or present. Often times he makes the claim past players are not on his "level".
All it takes is a few comments, a home town bias, or a likable hairdo to make for a hero or villain.
The WC is showing a rating really is not as big a difference maker as some say. The top 20 players 2780+ maintain an inflated rating by only playing each other in invitational events, never losing to many points. The other players play in swiss events, always susceptible to a greater loss of points by playing lower rated's but still extremely talented players.
(jk) Yeah, Nakamura is hated for telling the truth. Let's all make our heros politicians, druggies, and professional liars(actors).
Let's only support our football team when they are winning. No need to cheer for losers.
Hmmm... Naka tells the "truth"? He can be quite the sore loser which often is on display. Todays game he sat and waited 15 minutes before resigning, just looking at his score sheet. Not looking for a debate on favorites. It's always very subjective. I just find myself sometimes asking myself what it is I like or dislike and try to keep it objective. I do not know personally nor have I met any of the participants in the WC, but it is only natural to root for favorites.
From what I understand, Carlsen played in the tournament and risked elimination even though he didn't have to and it is unusual for a defending champion to do this. Why did he do that? Does it seem like a bad decision to anyone else?
@trickynick He did it because he enjoys playing chess.
So good decision to play.
