It's a toughy, as there are so many books I love. Sherlock Holmes is up there, along with the Dr. challenger books that doyle wrote.

King Lear of the Steppes by Turgenev has been one of my favorites for a long time. Not only is Turgenev a master at creating empathy in the reader, but the transposition of the legendary Shakespearean drama to Russia in the second half of the 19th century is just brilliant. Also, many various short stories by Chekhov, who was also one of the most realistic authors - without trying to embellish, the life of the Russian population and the Russian Empire from the end of the 19th century to the dawn of the 20th - at all levels of society, from artisan to the ambitious young farmer, to the aristocrats and to the military and officials !
