he Day I Tried to Trash Talk a Grandmaster

One night, I was playing blitz on Lichess. I had won 5 games in a row. I was feeling like a chess champion. Then, I got matched with someone named "KnightmareGM."

I thought, “No way this guy is a real grandmaster. He probably just added ‘GM’ to sound cool.”

So, like an overconfident genius, I typed in the chat:

“You’re about to have a real knightmare .”

No reply.

I play the London System (yes, I know, very original). He plays fast. Like... suspiciously fast.

After a few moves, things go bad. I lose a pawn. Then my bishop is stuck. My knight ends up on the side of the board doing absolutely nothing.

I try to sound cool again:

“That was on purpose... for content.”

Still no reply.

By move 18, he forks me. I lose my rook. Then he traps my queen. I start randomly checking him, hoping he messes up.

Then, just before checkmate, he finally types:

“gg, was streaming this btw :)”

I panic.

I check Twitch.

He’s live.

He’s actually a grandmaster.

And 2,000 people are watching him destroy me.

Worse: He clipped the whole game and titled the video:

“London Player Tries Trash Talk... Fails.”

One person in the chat said:

“At least he types well.”

I have now changed my username to "QuietPawn123" and will never trash talk again.
