Well, likely the word your looking for is debate, with a certainly neutral connotation.

pi, as you say, is a number. Infact, it may be irrational, but you just said number. It isn't i, which is imaginary (yet, still a number). Therefore, pi is still a number, and we are still discussing about numbers.
