What is, womp womp?

I saw this expression in a post today.

I remembered once I told my coworker a joke, she deadpanned back "womp womp". But it sounded more like, "WOMP womp".

"WOMP womp WOMP womp". Reminds me of what Peppermint Patty's teacher sounded like in the Peanuts tv specials.

I could have googled it, but I preferred to ask the horsey corral.
