That certainly is inane. I myself personally try to avoid repetition and tautology whenever possible or I can, pleonasmic or not.

Let me rephrase and say what I spoke in another way.
It would be so completely useless to talk about something so futile, and absolutely ineffectual, that both me and you will find it meaningless. So to continue to go on debating in a discussion, that would be unavailing and serve no purpose.

But I think he also made a book, which he wrote independently by himself. And as the only author, he was unaccompanied by others.
