Hello everyone, You um... Probably have seen me somewhere right?.. Yeah, maybe- yes, bcuz i was in the top 3 studies for a while.. Well, as you might know, i've joined lichess 9 months ago, And through this journey, I have met different kinds of people. The good ones who give me advice, the ones who chat and chill, and the ones-- that make me think im not worthy of playing. So,i made this forum for all those who never believed in me.. Hope you're in for a short story..

December 24, Eve of Christmas and the day that changed my passion. I got really interested into this game called "chess"
and at the moment i didnt know anything about it and then went from that to knowing over 65% of it right now. I made an account in this website called Lichess. At first, it was all new-- On Christmas i played my first game of chess with a stranger, wasnt too good as i remember it. Days went through, made my first acheivement, went from 900 to 1100 elo! I was soo happy that time, later on i got addicted, played it 24/7 and people started losing hope in me as i would just struggle myself just to lose games instead of winning them. I brang it down a littile, Later 1200, 1300, and finally-- 1400! The most recent achievement i achieved.

To all the people who just discouraged me by telling that i would never reach this milestone, all i have to say is... You can always achieve your dreams, if you believe in yourself. My goal is to reach 2000- then a GM And nobody will stop me no matter what. Sorry for writing an entire essay, just wanted to express some feelings.. Peace out ̄\_(ツ)_/ ̄

lmaooooo

2000 aint dat hard, pretty sure you can do it easily. Maybe in a few weeks if you lock in. :D

Congrats on getting to 1400!

So, there were a lot of haters telling you you couldn't get there (raised eyebrow emoji)? Users whose name rhymes with BitaminWater don't really count. :)

chess just doesn't pay off
it consumes enormous lifetime
and gives you nothing back

it's a great passtime for when you've got time to kill waiting for the bus or train or skip hour at college ... but investing whole holiday days or afternoons and evenings is a severe loss of lifetime where you can learn or practise sth that will yield in some way ( learning a language, crafting, programming, art, anything, meet people, make friends, undertakings, study nature, do fun sport, skill toys, ... ) or other.
everything you learn at chess will simply be gone one day for nothing in return ... and you never get any "better" at chess - even with 2300 2400 2500 which requires lifelong dedication and serious amount of study during years, and a small title , im, fm, whatever, there'll still be >1,000 point difference to world class players and you'll be only like "top" 1,000,000 or so

Keep up the good work! I hope you keep going until 2000+. You might want to play at a local chess club. You can make great friends at a chess club.

Keep up with it! Love it.

the problem with chess clubs is that there's only males for most

so generally third choice only for making friends
( as in compare to other undertakings & hobbies with mixed public )

Actually, chess helps with various things, and is as important as coding or any other extra you mentioned.

2300-2400-2500 earns you recognition. In tennis, if you do well, can you become Djokovic? Respectfully, probably not! Same for chess, can you become the next Alekhine, or Kasparov? Respectfully, probably not! Chess isn't a "pastime", its the same as any hobby!

yeh but when you code an useful app you can monetize - while you can't upload your bad chess games and ask for money.

i gave better examples than tennis which at its best will make you friends and keep you fit but won't "pay off" - it's not time invested, but time lost in matters of being useful for your living.
even pen-spinning is so niche that you can perform on a fairy or alike - while no one will "hat" you for showing off mediocre tennis.
and the amount of lifetime needed to get what we were talking about 2,000 or much more stands in no relation whatsoever of a same time and energy invested into any of my examples, that are #fun #useful #can build up upon, #sell, #earn you recognition and social life
