I agree and find for example that having posts that wish Merry Christmas or other festivities shouldn't be allowed either.
Maybe it's just me, but the maximum extent I would be happy to see this mentioned on a site like lichess is that there is a Christmas-themed tournament, not in the forums, because indirectly it brings the topic to light

Yeah, you are completely right!
In fact, Lichess should add another note to forum etiquette to not talk about religious, political, etc. such things that divide the people on any topic and make it controversial.
Also, forum is a place for talking and not debating.
I strongly disagree. If you remove controversial topics from the off-topic, the only thing you're left with is "today is my birthday" and "hot dogs or sexy cats?". And there is nothing wrong in debating.
