Most people I've met playing Online Chess are depressed, lonely borderline sociopaths who would murder their grandmother for more rating points.
So where does this rumor originate from, that claims proper Chess players ought to be that short, bespectacled stereotype of a nerd? I personally know of people who are, not by any stretch of the imagination dignified or even all that intelligent, but play brilliantly when seated in front of the board.
The FIDE President asserts he was abducted by Aliens, whereas a former World Champion rooted for the annihilation of the Jewish people, the incumbent one works as a model and the bishops DO look suspiciously like butt plugs ... nevertheless for most non-players, Chess is reserved only for the ones who wear the social stigma of 'nerdom'.

I believe that "nerd" in this case is not an indication of intelligence, overall knowledge, reason, etc. "Nerd" means having a fixation with a narrow range of activities. Since strong chess players are virtually forced to make chess a big part of their lives, there's not much room for pursuing other interests.
I would say chess players on the whole tend to be more eccentric than the average person. The word "nerd" can be applied to almost any person that is obsessed or heavily involved/interested in only a few activities.

I never said I was attractive, but -10? I'm not the most charming, but I can't be that gruesome.

The most stained thing in my room beside my conscience is the mirror, that's how attractive I am! :)

Might your conscience be stained due to your addictive personality? I know that mine is.
The nerd as an addict: This applies not only to chess, but to gaming in general, and even so far as the large number of internet addicts.
