I know Chinese and English and is creating a world-language called Harmonio.

i think you can learn a new language roughly or pidginlike, enough to not feel helpless abroad, pretty fast, if you learn only an elementary vocabulary, really important words. then use general words in a clever way to convey your message.

for example you either learn 'foot' or 'leg', 'hand' or 'arm' - depending on which in the target language is more general more common (e.g. 'renka' is hand + forearm iirc) - but not both.

you don't learn red wine and white wine - you learn 'alcohol'. 'bus, truck, formula1, cinquecento, jeep, pickup, a.s.o.' are all 'auto' (it.: 'macchina'). done with cars of any kind then.

you don't learn all grammar cases and flexions - just the most common and necessary ones (e.g. forget about german Genitiv, no one needs it who doesn't wanna be a native).

many many words are universal except in maybe china ... 'atom, electric(ity), olympiad (good replacement for 'sports, sportive'), Celsius, boomerang (good to express anything comes or falls back to \ on you), hula hoop, rocket\raket, bomb\booom, Alarm! S.O.S., Dollar (in case no need to learn 'money'), molecule, homo sapiens, mix(er), kaputt, gaddastrof, tsunami, ho(s)tel, plastic ... you get the idea.

also using 'Einstein' instead learning 'genius', using 'Klitschko' for 'strong, winner, champion', ... traditional worldwide known brands like 'kleenex' replaces 'towel, hanky, serviette, toilet paper'; 'apollo' will serve as 'man has stepped on the moon', 'sputnik \ cosmos' as what they are ...
...all of which will still be better than finding no words at all and being blocked and giving up saying what you wanted to say.

you're in the game, among natives, and you can go from there learning it correctly bit by bit by getting corrected.

to find such an elementary vocabulary, you just look atound and see, what is important... it starts with
• yourself:
º• body, head (=symbol for think, intelligence, reason, calculate..), eyes, mouth, hand, foot (also foot of mountain of chair & table, of a pole, and anything 'below, down, on ground'), heart ...plus what these do: eat, speak, see [nose, ears, are not so primar unkess you're a musician], walk, (jump, run, can learn later),
º• family, human, friend, man woman child mother, father
• house, door wall, window, table, chair, oven, fridge
• things around: tree, sky, sun, moon, air \ breath, earth, wood, stone, water, fire, grass, time
...
then,
• how things and people are, big \ small, hot \ cold, strong \ weak, light \ dark, hard \ smooth.
• and, or, not, who, why, when, what, because.
• one, two, three, ... ten, twenty, thirty, hundred, thousand. [done with numbers, times, ranks, amounts!] ... red green blue yellow, black white. (done colours)
...
• [lingo vocab' for your hobby or work or profession]

already this tiny collection will serve well. this little ad hoc choice's words already apply in endless situations.

there used to be a thing called Pimsleur courses which were like audio cassettes, listen and repeat kind of thing. kind of cool back in the day, now everything has become so globalised (mostly)
