In fact, we can give all the pieces the knight's move, but only backwards; forward and sideways moves remain the same. Pawns are changed into Japanese shogi knights (or berserk knights, which can only jump forward).
I once played a chess scenario like this in Stuart Spence's chess sandbox game *ChessCraft*, where nothing moved except the pawns. Yes, even the king was given the knight's backward move. This was placed in a centaur settlement called *Nipigon* in the adventure mode.

you are rated rapid 2100 and you don't know what a pawn can become on the last rank? it can turn into a queen, rook, bishop and knight from normal chess. what do you want???????????/
