It is because of the General Data Protection Regulation which has an effect only in true democracies like the european countries :-p (ok, ok, a few are actually lame democracies, we are working on it)

Aside of protecting people from getting stalked by ad and other evil corps it has the not so amazing effect that you need to click away a cookie consent on every fricking website which uses cookies. And if you go to a doctor etc., you will have to sign a text that you agree that your data gets exchanged with other orgs. Before GDPR you was stalked, now you agree to being stalked (otherwise no treatment). On the other hand, you can now request that your data gets deleted and they have to do it. Thats why Lichess offers this possibility.
@Savage_Cactus So would that still apply to people in the UK on here after brexit?
