Thats because they had the same mentality you have. Thinking they can change a man. You cant. He will change if he needs to change, but wont change for some one he doesnt like at all.
He does not like you. You can maybe get his attention for a while by over committing yourself, if you know what I mean, but he still doesnt like you.
Out of respect of yourself, just walk away. Find some one that likes you, or at least its neutral towards you. You have more chances there.

I didn't say before because I didn't want to hurt your feelings but he is toxic. I tried breaking friendship with him, but I couldn't. I have never trusted him before so I never fell for his tricks.
Liking someone who publicly beats down on you is horrible.
