Here in the mid-Atlantic region I've heard both. Growing up in NYC, though, I've always called them fireflies.

@morphyms1817, #3 -- lol. You may be interested to know that the chemical reaction that produces the light doesn't release carbon dioxide nor heat, from what I understand. Fireflies/lightning bugs are way ahead of the curve. (I know you were just joking.)

What is your general term for the rubber-soled shoes worn in gym class and athletic activities? People from different regions of the U.S. will tend to have different answers for this word, too.

They are also known as lightning bug but they are commonly called firefly. Even Google shows up result of firefly on searching lightning bug.

@rachel8 , In the deep south we would call those shoes according to their purpose.

"I'm wearing my basketball shoes today."

A little later I talked to my East coast family member, who told me, "Excuse me, those basketball shoes as you called them, are really Keds."

Then I thought that family member had three heads.

#8 -- @morphyms1817, in New York, New Jersey, and maybe other parts of the Northeast, the general term is "sneakers", as in "All students are to wear sneakers to gym class". In other parts of the country, people seem to call them "tennis shoes" instead. This is just my observation -- anyone out there care to say what they're called in your neck of the woods?
