Why don't puzzles have a timer on them?

Would make the rating more accurate...

Would make the rating more accurate...

No, it wouldn't. The rating is accurate as it is empirically determined. Ratings apply to a pool of competitors, and only to that pool. If you change the conditions you change the pool. Then, after a period of volatile inaccurate ratings you eventually end up with a different, empirically determined, not directly comparable, accurate rating that applies only to the new pool.

The idea behind lichess puzzles is to promote understanding and train pattern recognition. Putting a time limit on them is counter to that purpose. If you want timed puzzles you could try blitztactics.com, or do the blitz tactics on chesstempo.com. These work on intuition. Ratings on chesstempo are particularly harsh.

Puzzles are untimed because they are useful for teaching. Adding a puzzle timer would be the work of a madman since it just stresses out the player.

big word nonsense ratz
puzzle ratings are inflated compared to game ratings (classical, blitz etc) so you're wrong that theres nothing wrong with them.

i assume this inflation is caused by lower rated players solving harder situations than they would in game because they have more time. having a timer would stop that from happening.

how you decide on the length of time is another matter

@hish1993 the big word nonsense comes from having read Arpad Elo and Mark Glickman's papers on their rating systems.

Once again, the puzzle ratings are supposed to be different than the ratings for different game time controls. It would be very odd if facing the short and simple task of solving a puzzle, having been told that there is a tactic present, that most players didn't do better at them than they do at the more open ended and complex task of playing entire games.

which is exactly why a timer is necessary... so its not so simple anymore. right now i have to go use my own timer but also if i dont do it in time, i gotta purposefully submit a wrong answer because i dont want a harder puzzle next time.
