Warning system. Yes there is a problem it's at the end.

You know? I have always hated this stupid warning system where it gives you a stupid warning about letting time run out without resigning, or aborting on move one, or what ever else it does. I think it's dumb. But now the system is telling me when I am following rules. I had literally 9 seconds left. AND it said in my browser that I resigned. But the stupid thing still warned me about letting time run out without resigning. And to top it off it gave me a stupid pop up. I know you are too big to care about us little people, but I am thinking of moving to chess.com over this. And I love this site. At least fix the bug please.

Lichess recognizes that sitting until right before you time out and resigning is just as time wasting as sitting all the way down to zero.

In a two minute game, with over fifty seconds on your clock, you say down to nine seconds. So lichess warned you that if this is becomes a common pattern of behavior, you would start receiving playbans, because doing that frequently is not something lichess wants as a common experience for your opponents (and I agree).

Of course, occasionally you will have difficult positions where it really does make sense to spend time trying to dig out of a difficult position. And since that doesn't happen constantly, the warnings are simply warnings and don't translate to playbans.

I've never fully understood why people seem to lose their minds over lichess helpfully warning people about behavior will eventually lead to playbans, instead of having it happen with no warning.

First off, I have issues where sometimes my brain goes off. Medical issues. I don't need to explain them. And giving a warning on letting games time out is in my opinion rather dumb because what if you are contemplating a position on accident? I do this all the time in bullet. I will lose on time because either I am in the habit of taking a while in complex positions, or I simply forget I am in a bullet game. This is not intentional and should not be subject to threats. In a bullet game that is common. And from my experience these "helpful warnings" as you falsely put them have not even detoured people for actual obvious holding on losing positions. Which I have literally never done. And "helpful warning" is not exactly nice. It's threatening. It's like a back handed compliment. Are you going to try to weasel those into a playful context as well?

Oh yeah, maybe you'll find some caring service over there! lol

No.. But I don't have the nagging. Maybe reread it. It's not about the care, it's about the bad idea. There are a lot of bad ideas here, but I like the feel of the site. At least that nag is not at chess.com.. And it's not like chess.com isn't practically a monopoly anyway, huh?

If you truly believe your experience with chess-com will be better than here, moving there is probably the right thing to do. But you might find other things there that will be even more annoying than this "nagging". You may also find yourself on the other side of this problem and wonder why nobody does anything against those bad people who waste your time. You might then be more willing to reconsider if these warnings are really so "stupid" or if they actually have a point.

Of course, it's also possible that you will be perfectly happy with chess-com and won't ever want to come back here. The only way to be sure is to try.

I have been an active member of chess.com for a while now. It's probably bad practice to assume one has not had the experience. Beside that, this is simply a feedback request. Ya'll seem to be taking insult to this way too hard. Maybe have a cookie. Those always calm me down when I have weird hyperactive reactions.

I'm really sorry to hear that and I hope things get better. If your issue is related to your mental health, and not lichess, then you might not get useful help here, but it might be a good idea for you to consider therapy to help deal with these emotions.

The fact that it is not intentional - and I completely believe you - is exactly why lichess gives these warnings, so that people realize, "oh, this behavior isn't allowed here, I guess I should pay attention and remember that."

It's not mental it's physical. I black out a lot in intense thinking. And it isn't a behavior. It's also not consistent
i don't know it's happening and I don't know why or when. The point is, the nagging doesn't do anything but annoy people who try to be honest with their game. And the interactions here only prove my point. Even people who have real issues with playing get punished and they are treated like it's their fault they have an issue somewhere. It's a request from someone who it has nothing to do with and the only thing it does is annoy. It is literally a thing that does nothing. And the real culprits just keep going like it's a slap on the wrist.

It didn't actually bother me that much til the stupid pop up by the way.

What exactly is your issue with this text and how would you change it? Your text makes it seem like you are somehow offended by it.

Connection time-outs happen and sometimes out brains might time-out too. For your opponent and for Lichess it's indistinguishable if someone rage quits or has bad internet so it's giving you a warning. Letting your time almost run out isn't much different either and only if it happens too often one would face real consequences.

If you don't like it what do you think would be the alternative?

  • No warnings and never banning
  • Eventually banning someone without warnings

In my opinion both are significantly worse.
