Using Lichess Study while reading chess books

I'm trying to use the Study feature of Lichess -- but I couldn't find any instructions or tutorials that helped.
(There are so many aspects to the Study feature, but every tutorial I found covers something I'm not interested in)

I want to move pieces on the board as I read through a chess book ("Logical Chess Move by Move") and do 2 things:

  1. comment on certain moves and
  2. insert variations

I've figured out how to do both of these, but I really don't know how to do it properly. I say this because I often find clicking the "REC" button causes my most recent moves to be cleared. And yet many times I cannot insert comments on a move without clicking the "REC" button.

Can someone please explain how to do items (1) and (2) for my studies without erasing previous moves with the "REC" button?

  • Create a new chapter (Analysis mode: normal analysis)

  • Play moves

  • Click on the tab with a callout icon (comment on this position) or click right on the move in the list of move (comment on move)

  • You should see your comment in the move list (right panel)

  • To create a variation, click right on a move: Force variation (variation will be a line, variation in a variation will be between parenthesis) ... you can comment moves in the variations

Is it what you are looking for ?

"REC" means "record".

If it is off, whatever you enter is only local to your current session, and will not be saved.

When you enable REC, everything you enter will be recorded, or saved.

Enabling REC will reset the current study to the latest recorded state.

Some things make no sense to edit when REC is off, so it won't be enabled. But entering moves and forgetting that REC is off is one of the most annoying things - especially when noticing really late, as you are about to do everything again.

This was the key to help me. I now understand that if I keep the REC button on (green) I will be able to enter comments on moves as I want. Seems very simple now that I understand it.

Thanks
