Just now I got a timeout for aborting too many games, when selecting a random opponent in 3+2 in the app. These games I abort however because of huge rating gaps - I'm rated 2500+ here and I don't want to play players rated 2000 or 2050 all the time, which the system often keeps pairing me up with.
I understand that there are more players with a lower rating than with an equal/higher rating, and I understand it's not nice for those players to have the games aborted, but is there some way to set that I do not want to be paired up with players rated, say, >300 lower than me? So that I don't have to abort all these games?
(And I realize there's a "custom game" option. Usually I just have a bit of time and want to play a game quickly though, and I don't want to have to adjust the parameters for different time controls and different rating ranges each time. Ideally I would like to keep using the big buttons on the home screen, but with a filter for choosing opponents.)

Maybe the title should be changed to: Is it possible to filter opponents for the "quick opponent" search option?

App and browser: Click custom and select rating range.
To filter games in the lobby in browser, click on the gear icon in the upper right corner next to Mode.

It looks like a feature request. It would be nice to have it in preferences, if it is not already there! I also use the quick pairing buttons but most of the time I get opponents close enough to my rating. The algorithm does not seem that bad to me.

#4 The feature already exists: It's the "Custom" pairing button.

And the OP already said he knows about it and is asking for something better. Like relative instead of absolute limits on opponent rating, and the ability to have them applied directly to the preset buttons so you don't have to fiddle with 3-4 dials just to switch time controls.

Yes indeed - the custom button would have to be adjusted each time I want to play a different time control. Usually I just want to load the app and quickly choose a time control to play at, without having to do this fiddling.
The big preset buttons are nice, but @Toadofsky these would be nicer if they could be adapted with a filter like "at most 300 rating difference". Especially if lichess attaches consequences to aborting games when the matchmaking continually pairs me up with low-rated players.
And @Demonolith I'd say I get paired with lower-rated players in >90% of my games, and in at least 50% of the cases the gap is 200 or more.

@thijscom My guess is that there are less high rated players and the algorithm tries to find a compromise between the rating and the time you must wait to get paired with an opponent. I would support the addition of the feature you are requesting but I am wondering if this would not make you wait much longer for a good opponent.

I am already encountering the same problem as you @thijscom despite being low rated trash you would abbort a game with. The potential problem I am seeing with a change to the current mechanics, is that for 2500 rated players the potential waiting times are huge. But generally I would not be opposed to wait longer to play someone closer to my rating.

@morozov i too am a low rated garbage player...
