Time running without display update

Hello Lichess,
The following Bug has occured 5 times. I have just played a move and it is my opponent's turn.
His clock is working and mine is stopped (everything is working fine). I am waiting for my opponent to play, time flies and suddenly it's my turn but my clock is down 30 to 3à seconds and as we are at the end of the game, I loose the match.
It seems that my opponent's move is not sent to me or updates on my board and that my clock is not visibly updating either. So I dont know it is my turn !
I have a good wifi connection as I am playing from my home and do not believe that is an issue.
If you need to check some logs, please have a look at my game against PiMish today (april 30th at 17:22).
Thanks and I still like your application !

I have been experiencing similar issues for the last week or so and am slightly upset about these to be honest. I have lost one game on time before I realised that I needed to take measures myself in order to play games somewhat reliably.

To specify:

  • Very rarely the "move" or "capture" sounds do not play on the opponent's or my own turn. Ok, I admit this is not a dealbreaker.
  • Sometimes the clock will not start running for my opponent after I have made a move, I at least know immediately that I have to refresh the page in this case, this can also be managed, even though it is annoying.
  • The most furstrating occurrence of all: the page loses connection randomly on my opponent's turn and everything looks completely fine, there are no cues that something might not be working properly.

I have found myself nervously refreshing the page or reopening the app on my phone because as things stand currently I cannot trust that what I am seeing on my lichess interface is up to date.
Please, lichess team, do something or at least give us some kind of easily identifiable site-wide notification or message about what has been going on in the recent past with the lichess infrastructure.

Thanks. Peace.

These issues have to do with your connection and/or the device you're using to play. I've had the same problem before.

Thank you for your reply.

Neither my phone and network provider nor my PCs and ISP have changed since I have started playing online chess, yet I have started experiencing these annoyances only in the past few days. I have had opponents today who experienced the same issue, which lead me to believe it's not just me. One friend told me yesterday of having lost on time because of the scenario I described earlier, he was playing on lichess. I was also under the impression, especially today, that these inconveniences were occurring with increasing frequency. That of course may also have been mere imagination of an upset mind.
It is very possible that you are right and I do admit I have some general connectivity issues from time to time with my ISP at home, but I have not noticed any of that kind for quite some time now. Maybe I don't want my connection to be at fault because that would be a lot more inconvenient for me, I do hope that's not it. Time will tell.

Thanks again. Peace.

Hi Lichess Forum/Blog Community:

I want to report the same type of bug that Cobab2006 reported, and it has happened a multiple number of times the past week to two where all of a sudden my clock times out. I'm usually playing 3-2 or 2-1. The last time it happened was a 2-1 game about an hour ago on

https://lichess.org/PfYJv0nCZx57
. I make a move and then see my opponent's clock ticking down. Shortly thereafter or there about I see a red status message 'reconnecting' or something about network problem, but my opponent's time is still clicking down. Since I experienced this problem, I tried to do a pre-move in case my time shows little or no time and my opponent's clock gets time added back after the move gets displayed. I remember I had more than 10 seconds (I think 14 seconds or more) and my opponent's time goes to 0 seconds - and I have already done a pre-move. Then all of sudden, I see my clock has counted down and my opponent has 4 seconds added back. And I lost! This is very upsetting. I may try to start recording with my Web Console while playing and see how the network/webpage is doing. Also, note - I have tried clearing the cache and website off site data and then played a game, but I still had strange behavior and even trouble dragging my mouse as if it wouldn't move and a piece was being dragged slowly by my mouse as I made my move!

Also, I tried running what Noobbatter suggested : https://lichess.org/lag and both game back good (in the green). Lichess server latency : 2-9 ms and Network quality between me and Lichess - good (mostly under 200 ms - one time at 350 ms -still good and one time very briefly to 750ms - overall and mostly under 200 ms).

I just played another online game which had terrible response times causing me actually to play badly because I did some pre-moves in to prevent countdown timeouts . However, I had my Webconsole running to record errors and for diagnostics (I played badly though but of course the purpose is more to help fix the problem here).

I have to say, I have this problem. My connection manages to be good enough for movies, video games etc. What is more I get the same problem whether I use my phone or my computer (different operating system, different program, and different connection). I've mostly abondoned this website because of this problem. I think you guys need to take it seriously.

I have experienced the same many times. I make a move, both clocks stop, and suddenly the opponent's move appears, but my clock is down.
I do not believe it is a connection issue on my side.
