Three Buttons of Warning.

So, a suggestion is that Lichess tries to place 3 marks of warning. It could be three blue buttons close to where the captured pieces are displayed on the board
Once these three buttons are fulfilled, pr created, then the game is lost.

Moving a king into an attacking position is considered a warning.
Moving a piece illegally could be triggered as warning too, or not.

This would simulate tournaments, and it could be done in a championship, named "Rapid 15+10 (w/ warning)". Or maybe Blitz 5 + 3 (Warnings test) just to see how the players could react with this new mechanism, that could emulate the reality of real tournaments, where an illegal move is triggered as warning.

It would have a different gameplay, and players that are preparing for tournaments could choose that type of game.

One defining reason that seperates online chess from otb is the fact that it is impossible to make illegal moves online. If your suggestion was implemented, games with time pressure as a key component will cease to exist. The main reason short time controls can be played online is because 1) You do not have to physically move pieces and stop the clock and 2) It's impossible to make illegal moves. Your idea will do more harm than good if any. Besides if you want to visualize without seeing move options, you can turn it off and then think about legal and illegal moves when it is your turn

It would also rule out premoves.

I don't like the idea of different move input variants on the same platform. This will bring up many frustration for sure, while serving little to no purpose.

@celinofj we would also have to press the clock and lichess would have to code in the logic to allow the user to take back there move if ilegal and before they hit the clock which also ruins the fun of online chess and your opponent should claim rather than lichess

I don't understand the idea of the suggestion. There are two reasons to punish illegal moves playing OTB:

  1. You disturb your opponent.
  2. You could try to get an advantage by breaking the rules.

Playing online illegal moves are simply rejected, so neither reason is valid (furthermore you lose time if try to play an illegal move, so you are punished anyway).
