Seperate Rating Systems For Different Time Controls.

Please do this. Thanks. FICS does it. So does Chess.com.

One problem I see is that, people are free to choose almost any time control atm. Where then do we draw the line of what is a bullet, blitz or standard game?
How many different ratings do we need? 2? 3? More?
What about 960? And then different time controls for 960?!

From what I see, there might have to be less options for possible time controls. Then its maybe easier to split the ratings based on whatever times are chosen.

What is 1 min+30sec increment? Lightning/Blitz?
Where do we draw the line, is basically what im saying?

Its easy to say 1 min is bullet and 4 minutes is blitz and 15 minutes is standard. But what about the inbetweens.

Now that my ranting is over...
I agree that there should be different ratings.
In fact I would prefer separate ratings over other additions like correspondence chess.

I would say: bullet is under 3 minutes
Blitz under 8
rest:slow (this is ofc no way comparible to RL time controls)
increment is added to total after being multiplied by 25-30(best is to take average move per game)

Yeah legend is right, that's exactly my concern.

And indeed Communist, actually I do have a way to "estimate" the duration of a game. I take the clock duration and add 30 times the increment: https://github.com/ornicar/scalachess/blob/master/src/main/scala/Clock.scala#L27

Based on that estimation I will setup distinct ratings.

Also that means I'll have to recalculate all the ratings from all the games in the database. That may give unexpected results for some players. Also I'm not sure how it will do with reseted players. Well we'll see.

Good point about chess960 tho. I'll think about it.

That sounds like overdoing it. Seems simpler to just give everyone new ratings; yeah there'd be some griping but you can't make an omelet without breaking some eggs.

#5 - That's easy for you to suggest. The person with no rating to lose. You get NO say on that issue.
