There are many more chess variants than you can find here. But many of existing over the internet variants could be played here on lichess. Board editor allowes you to move pieces however you want. This could be used in non-competitive sandbox game for two players, who know some variant and want to play it, but can not find suitable online place.
1. Anything is moved freely, pieces can be added and deleted like in the board editor.
2. Both players can see the board and both can interact with it. Following rules of their variant is on themselves, just like in over-the-board game.
This could allow players to play cylindrical, torpedo, battle-chess, pre-chess, transcendental, cannibal, extinction, portal, guard-chess and hundreds of other variants just by adding 1 feature.
Board editor is already used for such games, but only hotseat.
