Hello Lichess
For sure the best online chess server on the planet! Just awesome work for a decade. Thanks a lot Thibault and the whole community.
However, I have to report a frustrating bug that has been around for a while now and reported by many people, in various forms. Let me try to describe it clearly. It looks like a connection issue but there are many evidences showing that it is not.
Note: I use Chrome as a web browser and a wifi Internet.
The game starts correctly but then I observe the following symptoms:
- A delay in moves (usually several seconds)
- Sometimes both clocks are stopped
- Very long to accept a resign
- Result: game lost on time
Now the interesting part:
- If I mouse over my opponent ID, I can see that he has already moved in the little popup board. The move has therefore been received in the browser but it is not updated on the main board. At this moment my clock is ticking or more generally both clocks are stopped. The move will be updated on the main board only several seconds later.
- While waiting, if I click on my ID (top right of the screen), I can see in the drop down menu that the connection to the server is OK, with the ping latency displayed as green: for me generally constant around 50 ms.
- To double check, I can open a new browser tab and open lichess again (or any other web site). It confirms that the Internet connection is fine, and that I am still playing a game (it proposes to join the game)!
The game goes on for several moves, but because of the "delay" it's pointless for blitz or bullet. The only good thing is that you can know your opponent move before it is effectively displayed on the board by mouse over its ID to popup the "small" board and see his move there.
I see this problem every other day so I can easily record a video or activate some browser logs (console is always empty) if helpful.
Another interesting observation: the problem is usually visible only for the first game or two of a series. After that, I can play for hours without facing it (confirming my Internet connection stability btw).
Thanks for you support!

I began having this issue about a week ago. I am seeing a minimum 20 second runoff and usually more. Blitz has become unplayable. I have great internet speed and great connection. But somehow Lichess doesn't think I am here. Before about a week ago, I had never had any issue.

I am using chrome. I have been consistency using chrome this whole time. As a shot in the dark I turned off all my extensions, to no avail.
