Howdy.
Some people like to set up the puzzles on a physical board and play around a bit before making a move on the computer. By the time one might decide on a move, a different puzzle could have auto-loaded, leaving the earlier puzzle irretrievable and the proper solution unknown.
Is there some hidden inactivity timer controlling this? Can users change some setting on their account or the site to avoid this?
Thanks in advance.

Press the "Back" button in your browser. If you're on the app, you have no luck.

Might be possible on the app, too, though.

I have never heard of the system "auto-loading" a new puzzle. Don't you have infinite time for puzzles?

In my case, there is no back button available in my browser (Firefox) after the board changes. It remains greyed out as if it's the first page in that tab's history, which it is. However, when I come back to the computer and rouse the screen, and then re-select that tab with the puzzle in it, it seems to "auto-reload" the puzzle, which causes the puzzle to change, with no apparent access to the now-previous puzzle that I was working on. That said, if I just manually click the page reload button, the same puzzle will come up without advancing to a different puzzle.
Perhaps this is a cache setting in Firefox, or one of the privacy extensions' settings that I have installed (uBlock Origin, Ghostery, Privacy Badger, and Facebook Container). I will try messing around by disabling the extensions, maybe whitelisting lichess.org, and checking the browser settings.
Additional ideas welcome. Thanks again.

Try disabling "Move to next puzzle automatically"; if that doesn't work, try to swipe from the left edge of the screen to the right with your mouse cursor to go back, or try to press Ctrl+Z..., or press Ctrl+H or go to History

Clicking on the puzzle code hyperlink seems to work for me. That directs the browser to the specific puzzle page for example, instead of the generic puzzle page .

Btw, I suspect this auto-reloading behavior is caused by Firefox trying to free up memory used by inactive tabs: https://hacks.mozilla.org/2021/10/tab-unloading-in-firefox-93/
