When solving a puzzle from the direct puzzle address (obtained by clicking the puzzle link on the top left) the puzzle rating is not updated.
This seems like a bug to me, or is it intentional?

I think it is intentional, because people may cheat. For example a user can share the link of a puzzle with someone and tell them the solution.

Part of the scoring system, is whether you know what type of puzzle you're getting. For example if you do mate in ones you'll get very few points. If you get a mate in one randomly assigned to you, you'll get more points for successfully solving it.
If you know the exact puzzle you are getting, LiChess will not reward you at all.

I understand your reasoning. But to me it would seem that if someone really wanted to cheat at puzzles they would not need any links or someone telling the answer, they would just use an engine.
The situation where the direct link would be useful is if you want to return to the same puzzle on another day without the risk of getting a new puzzle.
