It would be nice if the move numbers wrapped to the next line when the move following the number wraps to the next line. For example:

a4 e5 2. Ra3
Ware Opening, Meadow Hay Trap
2... Bc5 3. Rf3 Nf6 4. Nc3 e4 5.
Rf5 d6 6. Rxf6 Qxf6 7. Nxe4
Qe5 8. Nxc5 Qxc5 9. d4 Qf5 10.
Nf3 O-O 11. e3 Re8 12. Bd3

would look nicer with the 5. and the 10. wrapped like so:

a4 e5 2. Ra3

2... Bc5 3. Rf3 Nf6 4. Nc3 e4

Before pgn4web (http://pgn4web.casaschi.net/home.html) was introduced, it was cleaner yet, actually! The move display showed only 2 moves per line. There was no need for the ... stuff + it was much more readable. :)

I actually like how lichess prints the moves, annotations, variations, etc. just like most chess books - it's just this one thing about word wrap which I think it could handle better.

At the risk of going off-topic,

I agree with you that conventionality is very valuable, but I feel as if the standard format is constrained by limitations of old mediums and that a better solution may be possible if we look outside the box.

I'd like to point out that the reason that that is the standard is because it used to be printed on paper. Using two columns would require more pages to be printed on, which would be more expensive to the publisher.

By contrast there are no size limitations on the web. (which e.g. is one of the main advantages Wikipedia has over traditional encyclopaedias).

Furthermore, the format of a lichess game page is very different to a game in algebraic notation you'd find in a book. Perhaps it is time to move from the limitations of traditional mediums into a rather more structured display of moves in a chess game.

ALL THAT SAID, you proposed a worthy incremental improvement that has nothing wrong with it. I suppose I just have an earnest preference for the 2-column layout. :)

SLIGHTLY off-topic, I always preferred (I remember this from being a kid) the full description of the move - where the piece moved from and where it went to. For example, the queen's knight moving to C3 as a first move would be B1-C3.

it is auto wrapped, so it is the way it is.
