Making chess variants easily recognizable among correspondence challenges

I play correspondence CrazyHouse games almost exclusively. Most of the time I play with a real life friend, but sometimes I try to get an opponent who can play on level I can enjoy the game with. The big problem is that my challenges picked by ppl with rating 1500 with very few games, with very short time spent on Lichess more often than not. Total beginners, not even aware of existence of chess vaiants, then we have conversations like the following one:

  • Player1: WTF just happened?
  • Player1: why do I see a pawn on h6?
  • Player1: can you request a traceback ?
  • AroHar: What request and what for?
  • AroHar: Everything's according to the rules.
  • Player1: dude, you got 9 pawns on the board
  • Player1: how is that as per rules ? :p
  • Player1: i will give you a day to think about this!
  • Player1: there's a bug in lichess!
  • AroHar: Nope, you haven't checked what game you are playing, that's the only problem.
  • AroHar: It's pretty annoying though, that ppl picking my game, but they don't even know what they're playing
  • AroHar: lichess.org/variant/crazyhouse
  • Player1: whoaaaaa. insane !
  • Player1: my bad
  • AroHar: Np. At least you haven't called me cheater like some others did. ;-)
  • Player1: too much to calculate. have fun though!

This games aren't enjoyable for me as those ppl cannot put up any resistance. They also will be frustrated that they didn't even hear of variants and how easily I beat them. It's not good for anyone.

I wish if there were separation between games based on classic chess rules and variants in correspondence games just like it exists in the Lobby. Some color coding would be useful as well, even if only the colors of variant icons were different.

I'd also welcome if the correspondence game challenges could be filtered like it can be in the Lobby.

  • no. what is crazyhouse ?

If you haven't played a variant and click on a seek for that variant, you get a pop-up message that explains you're going to play a variant, and summarizes the rules in one line. I find it a bit odd that your opponents still have no idea they aren't playing Standard chess then...

@ProgramFOX

Thank you for your answer and I did some test based on it. I'm on PCs and playing in browsers (Chromium or Firefox). So playing on mobile in app might be different.

Here is the result:

LOBBY:

  • Seeking variant under Lobby is working as you described it. Small message box pops up when I choose a variant.
  • Even more variants are displayed separated at bottom of the list of challenges.
  • You also have lots of filters to set, if you wish.

( I don't think the standard message boxes are foolproof, but seems to be efficient enough. )

CORRESPONDENCE:

  • Seeking games under correspondence, there is no warning in pop up message boxes if you choose variant. Choosing a game starts the game.
  • No separation within the list of challenges.
  • No filters at all.

If making choices under CORRESPONDENCE would work like it does under LOBBY, I had no complaints. My complaints are for the shake of new comers / inexperienced players (and sometimes even experienced players) who do realize late that they playing a variant they are not familiar with.

I also think that placing the icon of the variant at the beginning of the particular challenge or they were color coded or both would make it more clear if the game is a variant. Although I'm used to it and I check the icon nowdays, but before I've learnt it, the icons were somewhat invisible for me coz my eyes were caught by the opponents rating and the timing of the games.
