I recently got stuck on a puzzle on here using a desktop browser (firefox), spent ages analysing it, but got tired and went to bed because I didn't trust my solution and in the app the puzzles stay there forever until you try them. I woke up, went over my analysis, decided I was as happy as I was going to be, and went to the tab to input my answer, and the page or puzzle or something automatically refreshed and gave me another puzzle! I was peeved, so I didn't do it, and just closed the tab. Came back later to solve that puzzle to see if I could then hunt down the original, and it refreshed again to another puzzle. Why does it do this?

I think this is a bug because the app behaviour is imo clearly desirable. The puzzle should stay there attached to your account until you try a solution. In the app if you take too long or leave, the puzzle will reset to the first move but it will always be there.

The puzzles have ID tags but apparently no way to get to them. This is a bit infuriating. I screenshotted the puzzle so I could show people and so I have the number but I still can't get back to it to input my line.

At the very least, if there is some reason why it needs to behave this way because of themes or whatever, it should push puzzles onto a stack when it gives them and only pop them off when passed/failed, and you should be able to play this stack from the puzzle dashboard. Or it should just give you the puzzle as soon as your puzzle settings such as rated, themes, etc. allow for it. It appears currently it is just lost forever, even if you have the ID.

It would be nice to have a 'puzzle ID' option to just be able to input it and jump straight to a specific puzzle and to be allowed to play it rated if you haven't previously attempted it.
I had about 90 minutes of effort and quite some conversation invested in this puzzle and it was a very interesting position. Infuriating to have it vanish!

This issue is caused by Firefox suspending tabs to save memory. As a workaround, you can click on the puzzle id link (should be at the top right, starts with a # symbol). That will take you to a permalink to the puzzle, so even if the page gets refreshed, the puzzle will be the same.

I agree it's a very unpleasant bug that Lichess sometimes loses track of the current puzzle. It doesn't happen to me often (Chrome/Windows), and it's not a big deal if I haven't spent time on the puzzle, but if I have, I've found no good way to come back to it. However the current puzzle info is currently stored, it needs to be something else and be permanent (with an option to skip).
Not that it really addresses the issue, but you can get to a puzzle's unchanging page by clicking on the ID at top left (e.g. Puzzle #lAegy). If you know the ID, you can get to the puzzle by entering it in the URL, e.g. https://lichess.org/training/lAegy (note that there is no '#' in the URL).

I tried this and found out it would not be registered as a completed puzzle on the Puzzles Dashboard.

user work getting lost was a problem on chrome/lichess a while ago. in correspondance games leaving a tab unattended for a while would do that.. then i used some extensions to control the tab life-cycle on the browser side, but it was lichess who also needed to recreate the nodes for some reason on a frequent basis.. this was more than 2 years ago.
I have not had such problems with chrome and lichess anymore with tabs.. And lately using local browser space, user work can even last between those, persistent user variation sub tree.
A recent lichess innovation (e.g. that way conditional premoves consumed or not, are not lost, for posterity of the game work, a worthy thing in such slow games).
I wonder if puzzles could not use such local persistence mechanism.. if this is relatable in anyway to the op question.

I just experienced a new issue related to this.
I opened a new puzzle, looked at it for a long time but couldn't find a solution. I checked my performance rating and it was 2190, puzzles played was 8. I closed the window. Latter, I opened the Puzzle Dashboard again and my rating had gone down by 2 points to 2188, yet puzzles played was still 8.
