For mac users on El Capitan:
Chrome and safari both use root certificates provided by the OS, which are out of date for El Capitan.
- Download the new root certificate from https://letsencrypt.org/certs/isrgrootx1.pem (you will need to download it on a separate computer or phone that already has the new certificate, and then transfer it).
- Open the program "Keychain access"
- Select "System" from the side bar
- Click the + icon at the bottom of the window and open the file isrgrootx1.pem you downloaded and add the certificate
- Double click on the new certificate click the arrow next to "Trust" and change the policies to "Always trust"
- Restart the web browser
