For mac users on El Capitan:

Chrome and safari both use root certificates provided by the OS, which are out of date for El Capitan.

  1. Download the new root certificate from https://letsencrypt.org/certs/isrgrootx1.pem (you will need to download it on a separate computer or phone that already has the new certificate, and then transfer it).
  2. Open the program "Keychain access"
  3. Select "System" from the side bar
  4. Click the + icon at the bottom of the window and open the file isrgrootx1.pem you downloaded and add the certificate
  5. Double click on the new certificate click the arrow next to "Trust" and change the policies to "Always trust"
  6. Restart the web browser
