I was in a 3 7 blitz game with an opponent with less than a minute on the clock in the middle/endgame. My opponent ran out of time. A message appeared in the chat window saying my opponent was given a temporary ban for allowing a timeout instead of resigning.
I don't think this was justified in this case as it was a complex (at least in my mind) position with little time on the clock.
A temporary ban seems extreme. It was in fact an interesting game, and I don't think my opponent did anything wrong beyond taking his eye off the clock.

They didn't get a ban, and that's not what the message was saying.
It said that doing it too often would result in a ban.

This is harsh punishment. I guess many don't do this on purpose.

The exact wording was:
"Warning, [player name]. Letting time run out instead of resigning will result in a temporary ban."
Maybe that could be reworded so it is less ambiguous. That message could be read as "you will now be banned because of something you've done" or "you could be banned in the future if you do this too often".
Either way, perhaps the warning could be triggered only if a player lets the clock run down for a number of minutes. My opponent only had 46 seconds on the clock for his final move.

New message: "You will be banned if you continue to abandon games instead of resigning. You will also be banned if you make a thread about this message on the forums."

gotta speed up when time is running low, not slow down, not stop.
I approve of the warning!

I appreciate the admins taking some action on this silly and annoying behavior.

seriously some people take an eternity to make their 4th move at times.. LEARN YOUR OPENINGS! i make sure i resign if I cant make a good move. im pretty sure i have lost 30% of my games due to time constraints. but im learning not complaining.

This warning reminds both players (in greater detail) what the Terms of Service state:

Hi!
I had to wait 15 minutes to benefit from the win of a game because my opponent stopped playing (his position was completely lost) WITHOUT disconnecting! Sometimes the ban message can be unjustified, but what to do in the situation I've just described?
