Hello,
Thank you lichess for the fantastic job you are doing for the chess community!
I have made a chapter in study 1, which is a game that I annotated. In this chapter of study 1 there is a position of interest with variations and commentaries, that I would like to insert as a chapter of study 2.
I would like to import the PGN from the study1chapter, to paste it into a study2 chapter, and then delete everything irrelevant before the position of interest. But it seems that such a command instruction does not exist or I was unable to find it.
Therefore what I do is that I copy-paste the position of interest in study 2, and then rewrite all commentaries and variations. Obviously, this is not optimal.
Is there a smarter way?
Thank you

If you copy-paste the position, then why not do the same for the commentaries and variations?

I meant that I copy-paste the FEN. I don't know how to copy-paste variations.

@chatlamov This is just an idea as i am not familiar with what you said...assuming the game has ended:
Select the game, move to the point of interest with one step forward arrow, press microscope, press 3 horizontal bars (sometimes long press is needed) then select continue from here....export/import that new game.

@CanadaQuebec
Granted that what you suggest works, it would only allow me to create a new truncated game and then export it.
Instead I would like to copy-paste, already existing variations, from one chapter to another, without having to replay or rewrite them.
Thanks anyway

If I understand you correctly, it is certainly possible to achieve what you want to do:
-
Copy the FEN from the position in the original chapter and save it somewhere so that you can find it again for one of the next steps (and also remember which move it was, but you should also be able to see it in the background when creating the new chapter)
-
Click on the share icon below the board and select "Copy PGN"
-
Add a new chapter
-
Select the PGN tab and paste your PGN into the field. To get a better view, resize the PGN field by dragging it down in the bottom right corner.
-
At the top of the PGN, you will see the tags, something like [Event "Chapter 1"] or [Result "*"]. After the last one of these tags, you will add a new tag called FEN with your FEN from step 1 like this:
[FEN "YOUR FEN HERE"]
-
Delete the moves from the PGN that were made before the position in chapter 1 (if your original chapter is still open in the background, you should be able to see which move it was and delete from there)
-
Create the chapter and it will copy all the variations, comments & annotations, starting from the position of the original chapter

@AAArmstark
Thank you very much! It sounds great. I will try it tomorow!

Ok! You can send me a message, if something's not clear. I've tested it and it should work.

I see, I thought you'd do this in a text editor after exporting the PGN.
As an alternative to the solution in post #6, you could also do it with the program "Scid" (which is quite powerful and free). There is the option "strip moves from the beginning" (by right-clicking on a move in the move list), which deletes previous moves and automatically adds the FEN for the start position.
But I haven't tested if exporting/importing the PGN from Lichess to Scid and back to Lichess is fully compatible.
