FEATURE REQUESTS: Add new piece set in Preferences

Greetings, Lichess users and developers!

Lichess is my favorite platform to play chess online. However, the neighbors of Chess.com have something I want: a minimalist piece style called Neo. See the image below:

https://imgur.com/1D0qR4y

This is the only feature of this platform that I like more than Lichess.

How does "Neo" differ from the styles offered by Lichess? Answer: extreme simplicity.

This simplicity is shown in three aspects:

1° The body of the pieces has been reduced to a thin base, while the head (except for pawn and rook) occupies almost the entire area of the square.

This makes it easier to identify the pieces because only those attributes that differentiate them from each other stand out.

2° Domain of curved lines in the silhouette of the figurine.

This conveys a sensation of softness very pleasant to the eye.

3° Absence of details inside the figure. Note that there are no points or lines beyond the perimeter.

This characteristic produces a sensation of uniformity that eliminates distracting elements.

I would like Lichess to have an option like this in "Preference > Piece set.

I assume that the design used by Chess.com is copyrighted (or am I wrong?), but it would be great if you could add an option that meets the 3 criteria above.

P.S. I have already examined all the options offered by Lichess. Honestly, they don't look that good. In fact, most of them are quite ugly.

I would assume that piece settings are not copyrighted. :) If you want this feature in lichess, go ahead! design a userstyle for it or find one online that someone else has made.

Thanks for your suggestion, @lakeofcrackers!

Honestly, I have no idea how to apply your advice. My technical knowledge is limited. I checked the menus on the website and the Lichess app, but I can't find any features that would allow me to upload new "Piece Set".

Can any user guide me on this, or is this something that is only available to a developer?

Dugong got it right on spot! There's an extension that you have to download to easily apply it https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/stylish-custom-themes-for/fjnbnpbmkenffdnngjfgmeleoegfcffe?hl=en

The assets are literally imported from chess.com so they should be identical :)

Thanks to @dugong161 and @lakeofcrackers for the information in the comments #4 and #5.

I checked the links they posted. The link provided in #4 gives me exactly what I want.

Unfortunately, an extension for Chrone is required to install it... My web browser is Opera, so there is no compatibility. This solution also does not work for app users on mobile devices.

Also, I would like my request in #1 to benefit all Lichess users, not just me.

Message for Lichess developers:

Is it possible to use the resources shown in the following link to make this style of pieces available to all Lichess users?:

i think it is very unlikely for the devs to add another piece set. however there is a Stylish-like extension for Opera as well.

u would just have to create a style and use the code from userstyles.org/styles/188378/neo-pieces-for-lichess

Pieces are rigorously vetted to be added. There are many pieces that are candidates, that might be one :)

Anyways, there's a userstyles directory you can just plop the CSS in in the Opera browser without the extension. Just download the CSS and place it in there. https://www.ghacks.net/2012/11/22/how-to-install-custom-userstyles-in-opera/

And while in the US, chess pieces would easily be considered non copyrightable material, in France, you would be exiled for issues like this. Chess.com with it's infinite well of resources could easily open up a copyright strike on lichess, and sue them in france by not signing a contract to allow them to chose US courts as the location of juristiction. This could lead to litigation. As you probably tell, lichess is not rich by any means. The lead developer, thibault, makes 1/10 of what he should as an experienced scala dev. lichess would essentially go bankrupt if c.c decided to sue, and that's REALLY not worth it over one piece set, especially when it's available with a bit of work from the user.

Hope that clears everything up!

Sorry took too long typing didn't see what dugong said, but yeah, they're right, there's an opera extension that might be more simple

Greetings, @dugong161 and @lakeofcrackers!

I am writing to thank you for taking the time to gather and publish the information I was looking for. One thousand thanks! You two are very kind.

And now... I'll show you my new set of pieces:
