I think it would be useful to be able to jot down notes on players and easily see them by mousing over an icon or something during a game with them.

Then you could write a reminder for yourself that so-and-so always plays the Sicilian or uses the KB extension during ultra games and such like that.

You shouldn't be checking any notes during the game. You can do this before the game, but not while it is ongoing.
Anyway, you can already do this by going to person's profile page and clicking Notes next to Forum Posts.

With regard to not checking notes during the game: ok, fair enough. In my case, I'd really just want to check them quickly before the first move... In particular, I want to make a note on KB users when I'm aware of them so I can see that info before ultra games.

Thanks for the pointer to the existing notes feature. Now if only that would be made available in the app... (I can only get to it by following the "more on lichess.org" link. )

Another simpler option might be the ability to tag players with colors and/or icons. (Like you can do on most online poker sites.)
