One of my favorite study/broadcast features is the addition of Federation flags next to player names, when their FIDE profile is linked in-PGN. It really helps to distinguish between players, and adds 'flavor' and a much-needed dash of color to the game. However, because these flags are only linked through FIDE Federations, they're all 100x134p, and so on, the functionality is severely limited. Recently, I've been working on studies of past World Championships, and basically any top players before 2000 are really spotty in terms of FIDE ID, let alone someone like Capablanca. The flags are really nice, so I try to include them as much as I can, but it basically boils down to finding a medium-aged Cuban player (too old to be likely to switch federations, too young to retire and have their number reused) and putting their ID for Capa. And Yugoslavian/Soviet players, who made up most of the elite in the 20th century? Forget it. Either the vague blue flag for Russia right now, or the modern flag of their birthplace, which usually just adds to confusion and defeats the point of putting in flags.
So here's my request: add a PGN tag for 'Player Flag', make it appear/overturn the Federation flags in Studies, and then just crowdsource vector icons for nations today, and perhaps a few non-existent nations relevant to chess history like the USSR.
Suddenly we can spice up Studies so much, or add historical details like the Russia vs. USSR flag debacle during the 1990 World Championship, while not having to go through FIDE for a feature already well-implemented. Plus, an excuse to redo those flags so we can have defined features in complex flags, or a finally non-depressed American flag. Since it seems like so much of the visual infrastructure, at least, is already implemented seamlessly (and, for example, chess.com has a similar feature which would translate well), I would hope there's comparatively much less difficulty in adding them now compared to, say, a year ago. In any case, thanks to the developers for your amazing work and devotion!

If you install LiChess Tools, you will see the flags of people who have chosen to select one.

this would be a different case because it is a study and not users

Yeah, I mean embedding it into the PGN for studies.
