This is possible for the user only by pasting or uploading a FEN and playing from there but this is tedious and for most players difficult to do. Also then it's just a position, not a regular game with respective metadata.
Just a 3-digit input field would suffice in the GUI.

I'm just curious, isn't the entire purpose of chess960 to have a random starting position? Out of curiosity, why would you want to play a specific set-up out of the 960 options? How does one of them become special?

Well, there are 960 of them, maybe there's one specific one that is more interesting?

That's true, maybe you want to battle your friend in a certain opening. I recall getting the standard chess set-up twice. Its annoying when your trying to play 960. But 959 doesn't sound as good.

I remember someone proposing that 1 new Chess960 position should be picked every year and played in every top level tournament instead of standard chess. I think it's an interesting concept because you'd see some fresh theory being developed over that time period for that particular position but it wouldn't be all about super-analized computer lines (too much to learn in a short time).

Note I did not propose that Human games could chose the start position. When playing Computer random also should be the default. It's about choice, for example for training purposes that you want a specific number.
