Maybe because he tried a new opening out and couldn't quite work it out and respond to those moves.

There could be a million reasons for that.
#1 He could be lagging and resigned instead of potentially losing connection.
#2 He had to go "wash his hands".
#3 His controlling GF said "Hey what ya doing?" And he got terrified.
#4 He could be tired and want to sleep.
#5 He had to play in a tournament.
#6 He had to go make dinner.
#7 He had to go to work/somewhere to keep a deal.
#8 He could be feeling sick.
#9 He could just have lost interest in that game for whatever reason.
#10 An emergency might have happened.
#11 Literally anything.
Be glad he resigned. Instead of just leaving.
