What does the name come from? I think I guessed the “chess” bit, but why “li”?

"Libre" chess. The idea behind lichess is that it's free to use and available to everyone.
Ok thx.
Says from libre and live. Can't remember where I read that but I remember my eyes popping when I went on to read that we were supposed to pronounce it as Lee-Chess. I cannot get used to it, still trying.
Cos you say Liychess right?
Yep. If that was addressed at me, yeah, I used to read it as lie-chess, assuming it was just a shortened form of "live". Heh, a horsey situation.
Lichess is a combination of live/light/libre and chess.
You can find it in the FAQ: https://lichess.org/faq
The pronunciation is french, as Lichess is based in France. Thibault said that the official pronunciation would be changed if everyone started calling it lie-chess.
Pronounced like "leeches" except with more "s".
@chasseboy123 It's explained at https://lichess.org/faq#name.
