Who is the world's stongest chess player?

Last fall I was deadlifting almost 2.5 times my bodyweight but I am sure there are far stronger players out there

Quite possibly.

It's an interesting question, and it depends how you define "the greatest".

Is it:

(i) the player who would be the strongest if they played each other at their peak? (This absolute measure is arguably flawed as it doesn't account for the huge advantage that contemporary players have as they have been able to learn using chess engines).

(ii) the player who was the most dominant in their era, and/or the furthest ahead of their contemporaries?

(iii) The player who displayed genius above all others, but couldn't sustain it for long?

(iv) And there may be other measures I haven't thought of.

If you think (i) it's probably down to Kasparov or Carlsen.

If you think (ii) then it's probably Kasparov. Or maybe Capablanca.

If you think (iii) then arguably Fischer.

It's impossible to control for all the variables, but if that could be done, I personally think Kasparov is the greatest ever. He used to *crush* all the other leading players of his day, and had an ability to calculate that is otherworldly. Carlsen has also been dominant in terms of winning, but quite often had to win in dour endgames, or in playoffs (cf. his world title games against Caruana), whereas Kasparov just destroyed opponents.
