What age is too late to become a good chess player?

Hey, I'm rather new to chess and I'm 15. I recognize that most professional chess players start playing at somewhere around 6 or 7 years old, and my goal is not to become a professional chess player, but just out of curiosity: how much of a handicap is it to start this late?

Assuming I'm just your average Joe, what is a realistic ELO rating that I can reach?
Just to clarify, this won't have any impact on how/how often I play the game. I play because I enjoy it, but it would be nice to know.
IT'S NEVER TOO LATE! WITH EFFORT, YOU CAN REACH ANY LEVEL! Who cares what age you start at? Why rely on natural talent when you have hard work? :)
I started playing seriously a year ago; got to 1700 rating on this site and have a 1122 OTB since I haven't been able to play many tournaments. About to turn 15 this year.

If you are just playing for fun and continue casually you'll probably get to about 1800-2000 and be stuck there for years. I know your goal isn't to become a professional player but if you have enough free time to solve challenging tactics and studies and spend time analyzing your own games for 10 hours a week you should be able to get atleast in the 2100-2300 just through hard work after a couple years.

But I'm not a professional so take it with a grain of salt.

Same chance as good soccer, tennis, hockey player.

You have rigid bones and a rigid brain, practically the same.

Good luck with your chess career!

PS: I started at the age of 16.
I believe 50 years is too late to become a good chess player. It is because you start to have some physical problems.Best age is probably 28-32 years.GMs start to play very young but i think should be better start at 16 yo.Starting before could bring psychological impreparation.
I'm going to be 37 in a few days. I am rated FIDE rated 1640, 98 less than my highest ever FIDE rating. I started playing tournament chess almost ten years ago. I still hope I can become world champion some day. I'll retire from my job in 7 years and get half my salary for no work. My daughter will be eight years old by then. I might have a strong training partner and enough time to do well. Lets see how it goes. Till then, let me enjoy the game.

GM Ben Finegold was 40 when he finally earned the title.
