Studying openings

I believe MeWantCookie's responses personally. I wonder if they would unban him if he got titled?
About "DON'T STUDY OPENINGS":

It is true that it's not effective to study openings as a beginner to intermediate player by way of memorizing lines.

However, you can still learn a lot from opening books, videos etc. by studying each of the presented games as a whole. There will be recurring motives (both tactical and strategical) that are very useful to know if you play that opening, independently of concrete lines. In a way, you want to use opening books to study mid- and endgames, specifially those that you will encounter a bit more than others because they arise from "your" openings (most of us don't have the time to study everything anyways, so it makes sense to shift your limited time into stuff you are more likely to use).

About that cheating thing: To me, the whole "Oh, I was just setting up my stream, Discord, yadda yadda." excuse is a final big red flag. A) Because you only came up with it belatedly after your initial defense was challenged and B) because seriously, you were busy setting up all that stuff while simultaneously playing an IM (and winning!)? Yeah sure. Why focus on that very unimportant game, right?

@Rapid167 Titles are no get out of jail free card (and neither is donating), and unfortunately (as you can see), even titled players sometimes succumb to the seduction of cheating.
I set up the discord before the tournament. I was switching tasks only to make sure they were running. That isn't that hard to do.
@Rapid167 I am only going for NM. I believe I am too old and too busy to worry about anything higher. If I got NM I would consider possibilities of higher. But I doubt it would happen. At 43 I have little chance of reaching higher than 2300, and I have my doubts of making over 2200. Unless I touch it for a tournament where I was super fortunate.
Ah, come on, what a bullshit?! It is absolutely clear @MeWantCookie cheated in that classical tournament. To address the questions like "how such experienced player could cheat?" - some time ago I played vs a guy who had about 9k games and whom I played 4 legit classical games before. And he cheated, and got banned. Why did he do it? Who knows. Sometimes people randomly decide to cheat, so nothing really special hapenned in this case.

#31. Why would they unban him if he cheated? What difference would NM title make here?
#35 It would make it more believable that he didn't cheat in the first place. The evidence that he cheated is all speculative...
Can people utilise Irwin, or is getting API access nontrivial?

I'm super curious what it does say, and would love to run it occasionally, since some players do look like they cheat against me.
Is Irwin that comp that was being passed around FB a while back that shown it could play on here stand alone?
#36 no, they are not "speculative". it is 100% clear. the case is fairly easy, I would not be surprised if he was banned just automatically.
