what does it means the different levels of stockfish?

Certainly! Stockfish, the powerful open-source chess engine, has different levels of play. Let’s explore them:

Level 1: Corresponds to a rating of approximately 1500 Glicko-2 rating points.
Level 2: Equivalent to around 1100 Glicko-2 rating points.
Level 3: Corresponds to approximately 1400 Glicko-2 rating points.
Level 4: Equivalent to roughly 1700 Glicko-2 rating points.
Level 5: Corresponds to approximately 2000 Glicko-2 rating points.
Level 6: Equivalent to around 2300 Glicko-2 rating points.
Level 7: Corresponds to approximately 2700 Glicko-2 rating points.
Additionally, Stockfish’s latest ELO rating as a chess engine is approximately 3549, based on the 40/15 benchmark1. Keep in mind that comparing computer difficulty levels to human ratings can be challenging, as engines and humans have vastly different strengths and play styles2. However, these approximate ratings provide a useful reference for understanding Stockfish’s levels of play.

Level 5: Corresponds to approximately 2000 Glicko-2 rating points.

I played Level 5 and it felt nowhere near 2000, more like 1500-1600. Also, my daughter whose (rapid) rating is a bit over 500 can beat Level 2 easily. Actually I'm trying hard to convince her not to play it as these low levels let her get away with things that a human player rarely would.

Can we explore why Level 1 is 400 higher than Level 2 please?
