There is a guy, who plays hours a day. Maybe he even spends all his days playing chess. He plays every day, without frees, without stops. Nobody plays as much as he does, nobody played so many games as he did. He has been playing for many years. But the thing that makes me wonder is: he doesn't improve. His rating stays the same as it was four years ago. How is it possible that a player, who plays whole days for many years, has no improvement?

How old is he? Not sitting there in prison?

I don't know...
Because just playing wont make him improve from some point on. Just playing without reflecting what happened will maybe change his skills to the better but not his knowledge. He needs to analyze his games in order to become aware of the better moves he missed, so that next time he plays them. This will slowly improve his positions in each game, so that he wins more games and his rating goes up.

Возраст тоже имеет значение. Это, как Алиса в стране чудес: Надо быстро бежать, чтобы оставаться на месте.

@ujcn science has shown that regarding learning new things age does not matter. Just the way people learn changes. It is more structured when one is older.

If just playing chess was enough to improve, it would be called violin.

@SelfmateMan How old are You? I am already 58 years old. For 30 years playing chess. I can say that the words of Alice is correct.
А, по-русски: Клюв вытащишь - хвост увязнет.

@ujcn Well, you didnt work in a structured way on your chess, thats all. You probably just dont want to become stronger. Thats ok, but dont tell me it is not doable.
Edit: im fourty.

To me chess is still fun because I'm still learning new things and I feel I improve a bit every day. I'm 44 btw. But I don't only play; I like to analyze my games and to study endgames (hate the opening phase). Chess is just too hard and too complex; you won't improve just by playing.
