A limited free membership is like saying "free month of electricity/water/food/rent". After that month, then what?
Here's my conspiracy theory about sites that promote these types of memberships. They set it up to get you to pay instead of you getting something free. And here's how it is done.
They have leagues over at chess.com: wood, stone, bronze, silver, crystal
See a pattern? They don't have a diamond league!!! BINGO!!!
They give you trophies and people want to get them all. Same thinking strategy. Now you want to pay. They set up the bots like casino slot machines. When you go to these sites, you are gambling and the house always wins.
Another site says "40% off, just use this promotion code". However, you can always use a promotional code. It's very rare that you wouldn't be able to now with so many events going on.
I think what they should do instead is what the pizza shops do. You make so many purchases over a certain amount, you get points and points change to something you can use to purchase things like upgraded membership or chess resources (books, chess sets, coaching, etc...)
I have yet to see a chess site do this.
