I am just a brand new beginner, I really want to get good at chess. I believe that it is the greatest thinking game ever. But I don't know where to start. The openings often confuse me, and i usually lose. Any pointers on what i should work on.
You can try on http://www.thechesswebsite.com/
And of course, is a long way with great effort and teardrops, but never leaves the practices, play, play and play. And at the end you could find the prizes. Bye

Here are two important rules to keep in mind.
1. Always bring your queen out as soon as you can. It's the most powerful piece, and if you don't utilize it from the beginning then its power will be wasted.
2. Never miss an opportunity to give a check, because it could be a checkmate.
Hope this helps.
Lol, actually I'm just kidding. I think what civitar said is true, I just started playing recently and even though I'm still low ranked, it's taken me a lot of studying and tears to even get this far. So many times when I've made stupid blunders in games I've thought about them for the next few days and it's put me in a depressed mood. Sometimes I wonder if it's worth it, but as IM Andrew Martin says, you have to find a balance between wanting to win and just enjoying the game. If you take enjoyment out of the game, regardless of if you're winning or losing, then you will improve fastest.
Also that chesstempo tactics trainer that Clarkey posted helps me a lot. I spent a few hours on that and already it seems like I'm finding these tactical motifs in games easier.

Don't bring your queen out too early, or your opponent can start getting pawns out and get near to castling whilst chasing the queen round the board like in this game:

You can also find channels on youtube that are dedicated to chess. Chesswebsite covers a lot of openings, but not more than that as far as I know. Chessnetwork has a lot of great videos where he analyses old games, puts out a few puzzles from time to time and sometimes puts out videos that are meant specifically for people that have just started playing chess. I really recommend you to check out some of his videos, it helped me a lot a few years ago! :)
Other channels you might want to check out if you're really interested are Kingcrusher's, Mato Jelic's and OnlineChessLessons's channels.

A good youtube channel I found recently is Igor Smirnov. He doesn't have nearly as many videos as kings rusher (who does?) but they are in my opinion of very high quality. Also chesstempo.com for free and unlimited (albeit elementary) tactics training
Kingscrusher**
HAHAHAHA, @FriendlyBeholder I'm not sure if you're joking.
