A popularly held theory about Paul Morphy, is that if he returned to the chess world today and played our best contemporary players, he would come out the loser. Nothing is further from the truth. In a set match, Morphy would beat anybody alive today. – Bobby Fischer
Efin Geller held his own against Mikhail Tal (6 wins, 6 losses, 23 draws) and Paul Keres (7 wins for Geller, 8 losses, 21 draws), and had plus scores against Mikhail Botvinnik (4 wins for Geller, 1 loss, 7 draws), David Bronstein (5 wins for Geller, 4 losses, 12 draws), Robert Fischer (5 wins for Geller, 3 losses, 2 draws), Lajos Portisch (4 wins for Geller, two losses, 12 draws), Vasily Smyslov (11 wins for Geller, 8 losses, 37 draws), and Tigran Petrosian (5 wins for Geller, 3 losses, 12 draws).

One might ask why such an obviously super-strong master of attack was never world champion. Bad luck perhaps, since in two candidates' cycles he had to face Boris Spassky, who was in his prime. He lost a match to Spassky in the 1965 Candidates' by 5.5-2.5, and again in the 1968 cycle by the same score. Fate can be a very annoying protagonist.
Why is everyone so negative on Carlsen? Even if he has had a down year in classical chess he is still rated a very comfortable #1 just as he has been for several years. He has dominating plus scores against everybody except for Nepomnischy, and even him Carlsen has dominated in rapid and blitz. In blitz he is indomitable. He should be 3000 rated and probably soon will be. No one else is anywhere close to him.

He would never duck an opponent like Staunton ducked Morphy.

Up Carlsen, down Staunton.

Up Fischer, down Morphy.

--------------

No need to explain Fischer.

Morphy on the other did not have the opposition in the US which was not a chess country at the time. Yes, he played some of the strong players of the day in Europe, but still did not take part in a day to day struggle against the very best. Anyway him leading Fischer by 5 points must be a joke. If I have an opportunity to vote then I use it to try to remedy this situation.

--------------

My non official votes go to Carlsen ( come on, 10 points? - You cannot be serious! - say I with John McEnroe ) and Staunton, who was a very original thinker.
