B3 is a standard Bird. B3 with a fianchettoed bishop on b2 completes the dark square control for white in this opening. G3 is played too sometimes, but is not nearly as crucial.

When I was young I used to play Basman Defense (1.e4 g5!?!?). Any Basman fan here?
I played the bird against a 1400ish player once in a tournament. That was a while ago however.
