He fell into a strange trap

Interestingly, I think the pawn move f7 saved his king from painful death. But psychological despair didn't let him see it.
Nice one! The only possible way for black to survive the potential mate is by going f5 (f6 doesn't work since g6! by white cuts off the escape via f7) and after g6 by white go for Bh4+ Rxh4 Qxh4+ in order to free the e7 square and get rid of the white rook. But after that the position is helpless, just so much material lost to avoid the checkmate

By the way, Bg5 h6 h4 or Bg4 h3 h5 is not strange, it is more or less standard if uncastled vs. castled. See Ruy Hopeless (Spanish) Exchange.
Indeed in many other variations black replies ...h5 to ...h3 after ...Bg4.
It is reckless to capture 7...hxg5 opening the h-file for white.
